The Casual Vacancy is the story of a train wreck in progress – one from which, because of Rowling’s remarkable ability to draw us into her characters, we are unable to avert our eyes.
The aneurysm that kills one of the characters in the novel’s opening pages is described by another as a sort of "inborn weakness," which ultimately is what this novel is about. Except the weakness is many and varied, and the sufferer is humanity.
